University students leading digital and social change

University students are key to state government plans to boost digital industry partnerships according to the GoDigitalQld Strategy and Action Plan launched last month.

Minister for Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts, Ian Walker, said the plan aims to attract, grow and retain talent in Queensland’s digital sector.

“Our GoDigitalQld strategy aims to increase digital awareness, confidence and skills across the state,” Mr Walker said.

“Embracing the digital economy is one of the keys to the future prosperity of all Queenslanders,” he said.

Social enterprise start-up Milaana was early to join the digital campaign, supporting the organisation’s online platform of connecting university students to meaningful internships.

Milaana member and Griffith University Marketing and Journalism student Sophie Wood said the power of social media shouldn’t be underestimated.

“We had an event on Tuesday at a local volunteer organisation, there were six or seven companies talking about intern opportunities,” Ms Wood said.

“We were talking about social media and after more than an hour into it, this man put up his hand and said he didn’t know what it was.

“If you’re not on social media you’re missing out on opportunities.

“Blogs are also a huge thing for personal branding because you have control over what you put there and what you let employers know,” she said.
