Learner drivers get free pass around G:link

Driving examiners avoid testing learner drivers around Gold Coast G:link trams because of the dangers despite no change to the road rules.

Department of Transport and Main Roads driving examiner, Methven Sparks, carries out 50-60 practical driving tests each week yet shuns the 13km stage-one tram route.

“I try and stay clear of it because I want to stay alive,” Mr Sparks said.

Parents of teenage learner drivers are also avoiding tram areas.

Studio Village mother and driving supervisor of a teenage son, Sharen Thornton, said the road environment around the tram areas was confusing.

“We don’t drive in the centre of Southport because it’s just too stressful,” Ms Thornton said.

“There are so many more things to be aware of, new traffic lights, different signs and lines on the road.

“Even I’m not sure of the right of way sometimes,” she said.

Worongary father, Hayden Turner, said he was glad his teenage daughter received her provisional licence before trams started testing.

“There are so many reports lately of cars crashing into trams,” he said.

“It has to make learner drivers nervous.

“I think my daughter might have failed if she took her driving test in Broadbeach or Surfers,” he said.
